Trashed

We live, eat, and breath plastic.

Every year we produce 400 million tons of plastic waste, much of which ends up in our ocean killing over 1 million animals. The average person consumes (!!) 70,000 micro-plastics annually.

These numbers are scary. When I moved to Vegas from San Francisco, what struck me was how little recycling was happening in my community, and how much waste my household alone was producing.

We consider plastic as a single-use material, despite it taking 1000 years to degrade. At this rate, we will soon be drowning in our own trash.

In the spirit of changing the way people perceive plastic, I *thinkered* around with a few ways we can create art from our own waste.

My intent is to raise awareness around the hidden opportunities and creative uses behind this waste material.

FIRST PROJECT

geometray

1

Exploration and brain storming

2

Making sense of the trash

3

Creation - prototype!

4

Iteration - to be continued!

1

IDEA

What is that?!? A few* bottles of coconut water!

Tetrapak is an amazing material - so sad it's tossed after a single use!

2

CREATION

I was inspired by the design of geodesic domes - their geometric structure could be replicated by folding the tetrapak into triangular shapes and attaching them to one another.

3

RESULTS

The applications are unlimited! a coffee table tray, a fruit basket, or a dream catcher were the first ideas I explored.

Our imagination is the limit!

SECOND PROJECT

LED lamp

1

Exploration and brain storming

2

Making sense of the trash

3

Creation - prototype!

4

Iteration - to be continued!

1

IDEA

What is that?

A coffee-, nuts-, or Pringles- container (or anything with an internal aluminum lining).

Nickname: the afternoon snacks series!

2

CREATION

What a fantastic container that can keep our food fresh for longer!

And what a waste to throw it away after finishing its contents.

Let the imagination run wild!

3

RESULTS

This can be a piece of art in the daytime, and a night light in the evening!
